About Us - Trauma-Informed Leadership and Public Health Approach to Criminal Justice

About NTAI

WHO ARE WE?

The National Trauma Awareness Initiative (NTAI) is committed to trauma-informed leadership and fostering safety and support within public systems designed to serve our most vulnerable populations, including jails, prisons, courts, public assistance, public housing, and more.

WHO DO WE DO?

We raise awareness about the high rates of complex trauma experienced by individuals within these systems and advocate for transformative changes in how we perceive people and their behaviors. Our efforts focus on empowering employees, building trust, and promoting organizational environments that prioritize resilience and well-being.

Important foundational awareness principles

By implementing and utilizing trauma-informed practices within public entities such as government bodies, criminal justice systems, and non-profit organizations, we systematically accommodate people with unaddressed trauma and mental health disabilities. In addition, this process will alleviate administrative burdens on the courts and better serve our most vulnerable people.

Education and Training

We provide trauma awareness training to state and local government bodies. We also offer training to non-profit and for-profit organizations—these training modules help to increase understanding and tolerance toward program participants with unaddressed trauma.

Awareness

We raise awareness of the high levels of trauma present in people experiencing homelessness, poverty, and incarceration through writing and speaking on these topics. We lend a lived experience voice from our leadership and board members who score at least a four (4) or more on the CDC-Kaiser Permanente Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) test. The ACES test is one of the largest investigations of childhood abuse and neglect and household challenges and later-life health and well-being outcomes.
